Jul 22, 2011
Dear AHEC Program Director,
We would like to make you aware of some important training opportunities that Primary Care centers in your state may participate in free of charge. The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) is providing trainings across the country for Primary Care centers on the topics of Suicide Prevention and Mental Health First Aid. Funding for these initiatives is through the SAMHSA/HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions. Trainings are brought to each individual clinic and flexibly scheduled to meet the clinic's needs. We would appreciate your help in disseminating this opportunity to Primary Care centers in your area that may benefit. Details for each training are below.
1) FREE Mental Health First Aid Training Opportunity for Rural FQHCs
The Center for Integrated Health Solutions (CIHS) is offering a free Mental Health First Aid training for a limited number of sites in rural communities. To advance mental health education in primary care, these trainings are being offered to FQHCs and other primary care providers. Training slots are limited, so please contact Dr. Tamara DeHay (tdehay@wiche.edu) or Dr. Mimi McFaul (mmcfaul@wiche.edu) by August 15, 2011 if you are interested in bringing this internationally-regarded training program to your primary care site.
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Mental Health First Aid is offered in the form of an interactive 12-hour course that presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders in the U.S. and introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of their impact, and overviews common treatments. Those who take the 12-hour course to certify as Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources, and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. For additional information, visit http://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/cs/.
2) FREE Suicide Prevention in Rural Primary Care Training for FQHCs
The Center for Integrated Health Solutions (CIHS) is offering a free Suicide Prevention in Rural Primary Care training based on a suicide prevention toolkit that was created for primary care by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Mental Health Program and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC). Primary care providers are in unique positions to prevent suicides among their patients. People who die by suicide are more likely to have seen their primary care provider shortly before their death than any other health care professional. The training supports the implementation of state-of-the-art suicide prevention practices while minimizing the disruption of normal operations. This training includes educational materials tailored for the roles of various staff members in primary care practice settings. It also features outreach tools for developing partnerships with behavioral health providers. Some of the materials included in the Toolkit are: a pocket card for primary care clinicians to guide them through assessing suicide risk and formulating a plan to manage the patient; tools to assist in developing safety plans to help patients manage their suicidal thoughts and urges; tools to educate patients on suicide warning signs and more. This training can be tailored in terms of length to meet the needs of your primary care setting. Training slots are limited, so please contact Dr. Tamara DeHay (tdehay@wiche.edu) or Dr. Mimi McFaul (mmcfaul@wiche.edu) by August 15, 2011 if you are interested in bringing this training to your practice.
